M. John C. Statham purchased a huge swath of land and built his home in 1850. On a portion of the land, he built homes and rented them to widows of Civil War Veterans. In those days, women, whether they were unwed or widowed, often had difficulty finding homes without a man to intercede on their behalf. Statham also donated land for roads, railroad tracks, and lots for churches. Statham’s generosity was unusual and quite progressive.

The Great Outdoors
Skip the hotel scene, book an RV in Statham, GA, and hit one of the many national parks located throughout Georgia. With hundreds to choose from, the perfect adventure is yours for the making. Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests covers some 867,000 acres of land and is one of the largest on the eastern seaboard. Hundreds of miles of multi-use trails wind through mature woods, meadows, down into wide, low valleys, and over endless babbling creeks and rivers. The forest grounds are covered with blazing greens of ferns, mosses, and other flora. Take care, though: poison ivy runs rampant in some areas. The Appalachian Trail starts in Georgia, and a large chunk runs through this park. Though not required, it’s recommended that snacks and bandaids be shared with thru-hikers, especially the southbound ones who are nearing the end of their journey. With thousands of miles under their belt, they’re bound to be a little footsore and, depending on how long it has been since their last supply stop, a little hungry, too.
RV Parks
Be sure and try to figure out where you’ll park your RV rental overnight before arriving. Various rules and policies in most towns prohibit overnight street parking. There are several campgrounds in the area. Ft Yargo State Park near Winder has a small campground with hookups for RVs. Though space is competitive during the summer months, the picturesque lake and tranquil landscape make up for the small size. The facility also features a swimming beach, a boat ramp, fishing dock, and disc golf course set right in the woods, providing a unique yet fun challenge to players.
Exploring the City
Though Statham is relatively rural, it’s an easy task to jump in a luxury RV rental and roll into Athens, Atlanta, or any of the other neighboring towns. The Georgia Museum of Art showcases a wide variety of art ranging from abstract paintings to sculptures. Housed in an ultramodern building, the art galleries are regularly changed and refreshed to give visitors something new to enjoy every time they enter the halls. The permanent collection features American artists dating back to the mid-19th century. Andy Warhol’s famous Soup Can print also hangs in the halls.

Joyce was a joy to work with. She started off by driving the RV closer to where we live, so that we could examine the RV a couple days before our rental even started which allowed us to get a good idea of how much room we had and what we could and couldnt pack. She also used this time to explain how everything worked, so that when we went through the process again on the day we picked it up, everything went super smoothly. She was flexible with pickup and drop off times, which was really helpful.
