We will be waiting to give you a full tour of your camper and how it all works! Pickup after 11 pm and drop-off before 6 am will cost an additional $50 dollars, We will go over how everything works in the van and take a detailed inventory and pictures of the vehicle and then you are free to roam the beautiful garden island!-POLIHALE is a PROHIBITED campground and cannot be accessed by our van due to the poor road condition. GPS will alert me if you go on that road. You will forfeit your deposit if you go to POLIHALE.Cell phone service is available Island wide and laundry services in every town. Our 200 w solar panel will give you the power to surf on your laptop and charge phones as well as keep the fridge cold and give you good interior light at night. Please refrain from taking your van off-road. Even 3" of sand can quickly result in being high-centered and no tires will be gripping.Standing on the roof is strictly prohibited and if you fall and hurt yourself be warned that it is your responsibility. The roof deck is solely for protection of the roof of the van and to secure surfboards. Load limit is 200lbs on the roof and for SITTING ONLY.This is a heavy Van. Don't get into situations that require fast acceleration. Visibility backing up is limited even with the backup camera, use a spotter to guide you.Of course, treat the van as if it was yours. The van is not allowed on any unimproved or dirt roads including Maha'ulepu beach (also known as Gillins beach or Kawailoa bay) and the road past Camp Sloggette (Road to camp Slogette is allowed). Vans shall not be used to carry passengers or property for hire. Vans shall not be used to push, propel, or tow any trailer or object. Vans shall not be used in any illegal manner. Van shall not be operated by anyone other than designated in the rental agreement. Nothing is allowed on top of or connected to the van other then what is provided by and used in the manner intended.Camping permits are the responsibility of the renter.
RecommendationsPick up is 3pm and return is 11am unless otherwise requested ahead of time! Late charges will be given if returned late.YOU MUST PRE-BOOK ALL CAMPING FOR YOUR TIME ON KAUAI!Some of these spots are listed online and open for registration 30 days before - most fill up quickly and rules and laws change frequently where you can/cant car camp or tent camp. Please note I am not responsible for the choices you make when you use the van although the island is pretty relaxed and you shouldn't be bothered!Private Campgrounds:There are two private campgrounds, one called Kumu Camp which is on the east side of the island also at Anahola Beach and it can be reserved online then there's the YMCA campground on the North shore that has to be reserved in person. These will be the places you will have the least trouble and the ones I would prefer you stay at. Kumu Camp opens up to the beautiful Anahola Beach.County/State Campsites you must book ahead of time online:Lydgate Beach Park: There is a lot of wave action here but that adds to the energy and be sure to go snorkeling in the protected swimming area to see lots of big, beautiful tropical fish!Anini Beach Park: Located on the North shore, it has a very far out reef makes the water calm and waveless almost all the time. Good shell collecting, snorkeling, and kiteboarding.Anahola Beach Park: Located in the northeast, this beach is one of my favorites for staying overnight. A typical local hangout spot, to the left of the Lifeguard station is typically reserved for camping and to the right is more space for parking. Highly recommend walking this beach and watching locals early in the morning on their dirtbikes and ATVs cruising around the beach.Kokee State Park: This is a must-stay which is up in the cold Waimea canyon area you can get your permit online. Some of the most amazing hikes on the island are here and I will provide you with my personal list of favorites!Haena Wilderness Park (contains the Kalalau Trail) : You will need both camping permits and parking permits to use the hike-in campsites along the NaPali Coast. Please reach out to me if youd like to do this so I can give you all the information you need. This is a very strenuous hike and you MUST be VERY prepared to complete the 22 miles with a pack.Polihale State Park. We don't allow our van to go there the roads are too treacherous. The van has a GPS tracker and you will forfeit your deposit if you decide to go to Polihale. Please note there is no longer Camping allowed at Polihale due to the destruction over the past few years. Please do not go there with the van. If you'd really like to see it, contact me and I can arrange for you a local tour via 4x4.The county campgrounds, there are seven of which three are closed. Permits are sold at the county building and in small towns around the island. Personally I would go for Lydgate campground which is near the town of Kapaa or the Kumu privately owned campground in Anahola. If your plane is arriving here by 2 p.m. you will have time after the Camper orientation to go buy a permit.Camping Locations On Kauai (www dot Kauai "dot" gov/ Camping)There are many 24/7 locations to find bathrooms and fresh water to drink and to use to shower. ALL County and State Beaches have showers, taps for water fill up, and reasonably good public restrooms that always have TP. Also, the Safeways in Kauai are 24/7 with cleaner bathrooms. No off-road driving is allowed at any time, no exceptions. The vehicle will be FULL OF GAS when you arrive and you will need to fill it up upon DROP OFF. It will be charged $150 if returned empty due to the size of the tank and the cost for diesel.

We had an absolutely wonderful time. This is the best way to visit the island and enjoy a camping experience. David was such gracious host - very easy to work with and accommodating.

Unsafe condition of tires for driving on roads. Vehicle is not in the condition as advertised and functions of the vehicle were not working including air conditioning. Host did not bring up any concerns when I dropped off vehicle and returned full security deposit. After requesting a refund for returning rental van early due to unsafe tire conditions, and inconvenience of van functions (sliding door hardly opens) the host decided to claim damages to van to offset return value. Host does not keep van or assets include in van/rental in good condition. Host requests to message off of Outdoorsy platform. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.

    Blake’s answer

This review was written by someone that continually tried to cancel his trip before he came and then returned Big Blue early to try to get a refund by complaining. He did not even know Big Blue was on the island of Kauai and his claims have been proven as lies.

Big Blue was a great vacation choice. We've traveled plenty with home rentals and hotels but this was a better way to enjoy the natural beauty of Kauai. Blake's recommendations on places to camp was great, and with finding several private campgrounds we had a good blend of local spots, hot showers, and secluded places. We hiked in the Kokee mountains, the Northern Na'pali coast, and everywhere in between. We snorkeled the best beaches (in order) Ke'e, Tunnels and Anini. Blue was a great transport to helicopter tours through Air Kauai, and a coast tour through Holo Holo Charters - snorkeling off the coasts of Na'pali, and Lehua Ni'ihau. We had everything we needed to make a few home made meals and sleep off the sun drenched (and several rain drenched) days. Strongly recommend Big Blue's owners for their communication, advise, and honesty. Mahalo!

Q.Why do you have a strict cancellation policy?
    A.
Unfortunately I have been wronged by many potential renters who have booked months in advance and then canceled close to the time of the rental. Since Outdoorsy holds all rental fees until the first day of your rental starts, I do not get anything if you don't show up. I would prefer to change your dates than have to cancel and can be very flexible if there are dates open that you'd like to switch to!

Q.What flexibility is available for picking up and dropping off the RV?
    A.
I am very flexible with pickup and your arrival time on island. If I cannot be there myself, we can arrange a contactless pickup and I will provide a virtual tour so you are ready to go!

Q.Do you offer discounts on the daily rental rate?
    A.
I typically do not discount nightly rates, but if you are in a pinch please reach out and I will be as accommodating as possible!
