Less crowded (and epically awesome) RV trips for this Spring Break

The ‘typical’ (or maybe stereotypical…) spring break trip is composed of long airport lines, crowded beaches, and a nightlife that can stretch into the wee hours of the morning.

While this sort of trip might be a fun right of passage, it’s not the sort of trip we want to chat about today. Outdoorsy is all about helping you restore your connection with nature. And we’re also all about the fact that RVing trips can be some of the most affordable, family-friendly, and memorable sorts of vacations that you can plan.

So let’s dig into some spring break RV itineraries that’ll avoid the crowds and get you plugged back into nature, family, and friends.

What makes RVing an epic way to take a spring break trip?

Before we jump into spring break RV destinations, let’s take a beat to unpack why we think RVing is one of the best ways to spend your spring break:

  1. RVing is one of the most affordable ways to travel — Compared to other options, RVing vacations are known to create a cost savings of up to 50% for a family of four. This even holds true when you rent an RV because you’ll save by keeping the family together, not paying for plane tickets, and enjoying meals in together.
  2. RVing creates connectedness — Whether you’re traveling with friends, family, or as a couple, RVing naturally puts you all together with plenty of time to connect and converse.

RVing lets you enjoy the spaces in between rather than waiting in a long airport line.

RVing helps you soak in the open road while soaking in your relationships.

RVing causes you to make the time you might not otherwise make for the things that matter most.
  1. RVing lets you chase 70 — Spring break trips are a swell time to escape the cold. While ‘typical’ spring break vacations usually involve only one sunny locale, RVing trips let you chase 70 degrees and sunshine along multiple stops.

And if you do opt to fly to cut down on travel time — many of our owners offer airport delivery/drop-off services with their rental.
  2. Pack more — While we don’t want you to stuffocate yourself, the reality is you can bring more useful stuff on an RV trip than on a plane trip.

For example, many of our owners offer add-ons like mountain bikes, kayaks, and more that’ll allow you to make the most of your spring break trip.

And take our word for it — it’s a heck of a lot easier to fit a paddleboard on a camper than on a plane.
  3. Spring break RV trips open up new discoveries — Road trips cause you to bump into new destinations that might not have otherwise made the itinerary.

Take a spring break RV trek with an attitude toward new discoveries and you’ll find a whole lot more treasure than with the standard spring break vacay.
  4. Campfires, s’mores, and hang-out time — The camaraderie that happens around the campfire cannot be beat.

Uncrowded (and epically awesome) RV trips for this spring break

We want you to beat the typical Florida crowds and airport lines this spring break, so we put together a smattering of fun spots for you to RV along this year.

Rather than divide this list by region, we thought it’d be fun to divvy this up based on who we think each block of trips would be good for.

Friends, family, and couples. That’s who we figure will be taking spring break RV trips, so that’s how we’ve organized things. Here it goes…

Spring break RV trips for friends

A swell spring break pastime happens when you gather a group of pals and hit the road around shared interests. Whether you roll to a festival, journey for outdoor activities, or something else entirely — RVing road trips are one of the best ways to get closer with friends. Here are a few of our favorite spots for this:

Las Cruces, NM

This severely underrated spot in southern New Mexico has all the ingredients you need for a friend’s road trip.

Las Cruces is New Mexico’s second-largest city and sits at the foot of the Oregon Mountains. It’s also in Southern New Mexico, so you’ll benefit from warm spring weather. There’re a plethora of hiking and biking opportunities in the area as well.

Las Cruces has nine state parks within 90 minutes of the city plus White Sands National Monument is a stone’s throw away. White Sands is an other-worldly spot and the only place on earth where you can bike on a hard-packed gypsum sand road through a massive dune field.

Roswell, NM is just a few hours from Las Cruces if you and your friends want to take the trek to the International UFO Museum.

And before we close out on this New Mexico destination, we think it’s important to note that the whole state really is a spring break gem. From Mountain biking in Santa Fe to ski camping to exploring Albuquerque’s food scene — you truly have all the ingredients you need in the Land of Enchantment.

Greenville, SC

This Southeastern spot at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains sees over 200 sunny days a year. We love off-the-beaten-path locales like this in the Southeast because you’ll benefit from warm hospitality, fine food, and world-class nature.

Main Street features over 120 locally-owned restaurants and boutiques and Greenville has a 32-acre park that features several waterfalls.

Greenville is also centrally located to places like Asheville, NC, Charlotte, NC, and Pigeon Forge, TN — all spots that would be fun additions to your southern spring break itinerary.

The Appalachian Trail and Great Smoky Mountains National Park aren’t far either, meaning you can easily restore yourself in nature on this trip.

Spring break RV trips for families

These spots are focused on fun activities and wholesome entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. They’ll also afford the opportunity to choose from various campgrounds where you can park your RV and create memories ‘round the fire.

Branson, MO

It’s a shame that this town in The Ozarks doesn’t make more itineraries, but that’s really okay because it gives you more chances for less crowded fun.

The truth is that Branson is a family spring break spot that features world-class entertainment, camping, and outdoorsy opportunities.

Take the family to Silver Dollar City, a family-owned amusement park that’s ⅓ epic rides, ⅓  entertainment, and ⅓ maker-faire paying homage to crafts of a bygone era.

Or, you could hit up the Branson Strip or Historic Downtown Branson for family-friendly entertainment.

And when it comes to the outdoors, Branson has it in spades. From Table Rock Lake, to Dogwood Canyon, and so so so much more — you will not be want for outdoorsy opportunities when you spring break in Branson.

Chattanooga is also a naturally beautiful place that happens to be one of the hang-gliding capitals of the U.S. due to its tremendous ridges and valleys.

The region offers a plethora of hiking, biking, hunting, and fishing activities that the whole family can enjoy. You’ll also benefit from some of the coolest campgrounds and RV parks when you take a spring break RV trip here.

Florida Panhandlin’

I know… I know… I said this article was about avoiding crowded places like Florida. But, the fact is that the Florida Panhandle and the Gulf-touching zones of Alabama and Mississippi are dotted with super cool small-town spots that can make for an uncrowded family spring break trip.

And if you can combine small-town southern hospitality with smooth beaches, great food, and easy living, why wouldn’t you?

Places like Navarro Beach, FL, Dauphin Island, AL, and Ocean Springs, MS are spots where you can experience family-friendly activities, camping, and beaches without the wild crowds.

Florida also has some of the best state parks in the nation that also tend to be highly RV friendly.

Carlsbad, California

If family-friendly West Coast beaches are what you seek, look no further than this SoCal spot. It’s tucked between San Diego and Los Angeles, so it’s close to major attractions while still being low-key.

Take the kids to LEGOland California and the SEA LIFE Aquarium when you’ve had your fill of the beautiful Carlsbad beaches.

You could also check out the Carlsbad Flower Fields in full bloom during most weeks of March. The flower fields are epically beautiful and you can even pick-n-eat your own blueberries.

Speaking of pick-n-eat, the Carlsbad Strawberry Company is another tasty place to trek around, as is the Carlsbad Farmers Market.

The thing about Carlsbad is it’s super easy to access via some major population centers, but still gets you off the beaten path for a low-key (and uber-fun) family spring break on the West Coast.

Spring break RV trips for couples

Couples RV travel is one of the best ways to build a connection with your significant other. You’ll have plenty of time for convo over the road, ‘round the campfire, and as you reconnect with nature. Here’s a handful of our favorite off-the-beaten-path couple’s spring break spots:

Hot Springs, AR

The U.S. set aside this land as a federal reserve in 1832 — making it the oldest federally protected spot in the U.S. (it predated Yellowstone’s founding by 50 years!).

This place was sacred to indigenous people for hundreds — if not thousands — of years before Europeans arrived. Native Americans were said to have treated Hot Springs as neutral territory where all tribes could enjoy its healing waters in peace.

The bottom line is that the town and Hot Springs National Park are two very special places for couples to enjoy during spring break.

The two of you could take a dip in the healing hot waters no matter what the weather is like.

And once your fingers prune up, the town is packed with fun breweries (be sure to check out the Superior Bathhouse Brewery where they brew beer out of spring water!), restaurants, hikes, and other outdoor activities.

Hot Springs is a place with wonderful walks, delightful date options, and lower crowds — making it one of our favorite couples’ spots for this spring break.

Southwest Utah and Northern Arizona

This whole region offers a treasure chest of gems for you to explore. From Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks to the Coconino and Prescott National Forests to the fun towns of St. George, UT, and Flagstaff, AZ there’s something for every couple in these parts.

And the spring weather in these areas is usually mild and sunny. Sure, you can encounter the occasional cooler and even snowy days, but it always suns back up fast. Besides, there’s nothing quite like a light dusting of snow on Utah’s iconic Hoodoos.

Get ready for epic mountain biking (remember, you can add-on mountain bikes to your RV rental), glorious hikes, and plenty of small-town charm if you choose these areas for your spring breaking.

Sequim Washington

This small town in Washington State is packed with plenty of charm. And while the PNW (Pacific Northwest) might not seem like a typical spring break destination, we find it to be a terrific zone to RV through this time of year.

That’s because you’ll be competing with fewer crowds for the wide swaths of national parks and forests that dot this region. And the weather during spring there — while it can be rainy — is relatively mild and generally perfect for campfire enjoyment.

Sequim puts you right by Sequim Bay State Park where you can stroll along the beach just outside town. In town, take a walk through the Sequim Trading Co. Plaza or simply stroll through the town’s colorful, historic neighborhoods.

Sequim also puts you in range of places like Seattle, Olympic National Park, and fun road trips along the Washington and Oregon coasts

  • This fifth-wheel isn’t as massive as some of the others, so can more easily be towed or delivered. It’s a splendid space for a couple who wants home-like amenities as they roll.

Josh and his wife traveled around the country in an '88 Airstream for 4+ years of full-time RVing. They made an unexpected pitstop in Montana in 2020 and haven't left since. That's because they got hooked on the glamping resort they run by Glacier National Park. Fittingly, they keep up their RVing love by renting out vintage Airstreams and other retro RVs to travelers hitting Montana.
